I know that a book has clicked for me when I get this feeling that I wanted to be friends with the main characters of its story. That’s how I felt with Squishy Sand written by Charlene McIver, the first book in Leigh’s Wheelie Adventures series.
Meet Leighand his unstoppable friends, Cosmo and Tara as they embark on an escapade at one of my favorite spots in the whole world – the beach! There’s nothing like the feel of squishy sand beneath my feet to help me relax as I breathe in the fresh air near the shore. But what do you do if the sand itself is your main problem from enjoying the seashore?
That’s where the adventure of our tireless trio begins. Cosmo and Tara need to help Leigh navigate his wheelchair if they ever hope to have fun at the beach with their dogs that summer. Though clueless at first on what to do, they use their creativity and knack for innovation to help Leigh enjoy the beach without the fear of sinking in the sand.
Would they succeed? Would their problem-solving ability be enough to overcome their greatest hurdle that summer day?
Let this book take you back to your childhood days with its whimsical illustrations. And let your children follow suit as they also try to help Leigh overcome his troubles.
Parents and children, especially those with disabled loved ones are bound to enjoy reading this book together as they join the trio’s adventure at the beach. Not only would it teach children empathy and kindness, but it would also pique at their imagination and resourcefulness when finding a way to overcome Leigh’s problem with his wheelchair.
I salute Leigh for his courage and cheerfulness despite the obstacles in his young life. His disability does not hinder him from enjoying playful activities and he trusts and accepts the help of his friends.
Educational, visually captivating and inspiring, this book truly deserves its Little Parachutes Gold Star award. I’m grateful and honored to be a part of a story inspired by Charlene’s dear son, Leigh Thomas McIver.
May this book encourage many others to live a full life, overcome their obstacles and reach their dreams!
